The 4 Quls — Meaning, Significance & Why Muslims Display Them at Home

There are four surahs in the Quran that the Prophet ﷺ recited together as a practice of protection — before sleep, during times of illness, and as a shield against harm seen and unseen. Known collectively as the 4 Quls — named for the Arabic word qul (say) with which each begins — these short but enormously powerful chapters form one of the most complete declarations of faith, protection, and tawhid in the entire Quran.

Muslim homes across India and the world are increasingly displaying the 4 Quls as wall art — not merely as decoration, but as a living expression of faith, a daily reminder of Allah's protection, and a teaching tool for the next generation. This guide covers the meaning of each surah, their significance in Islamic tradition, and how to bring them into your home.

What Are the 4 Quls?

The 4 Quls are four short surahs from the end of the Quran, each beginning with the word Qul — a divine command to the Prophet ﷺ, and through him to every believer, to make a declaration:

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) — a declaration of Allah's absolute oneness
  • Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113) — seeking refuge in Allah from external harm
  • Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114) — seeking refuge in Allah from internal, whispered harm
  • Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109) — a declaration of disavowal from false worship

Together, they address the full spectrum of a believer's relationship with Allah — affirming who He is, rejecting what He is not, and seeking His protection from every form of harm.

Surah Al-Ikhlas — The Surah of Pure Tawhid

Surah Al-Ikhlas is the most theologically dense of the four. In just four verses, it delivers a complete declaration of tawhid — the absolute oneness of Allah:

"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor was born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent."

The name Al-Ikhlas means sincerity or purity of faith — and the surah earns that name fully. It affirms that Allah is One, self-sufficient and eternal, that He has no children and no parents, and that nothing in existence is comparable to Him. Every major theological error about the nature of God is addressed and negated in these four short lines.

The Prophet ﷺ described Surah Al-Ikhlas as equivalent in reward to reciting one-third of the entire Quran — because it contains the complete declaration of tawhid, which is the foundation upon which all of Islam rests. This is an authentic narration, established in the major hadith collections.

Displaying Surah Al-Ikhlas in the home is a declaration — visible to everyone who enters — of the household's belief in the oneness of Allah. It is also among the first surahs taught to Muslim children, making it a natural choice for a child's bedroom or study space.

Our Surah Al-Ikhlas wall art features all four verses in premium Arabic calligraphy, available in multiple sizes and framing options.

Surah Al-Falaq — Seeking Refuge from External Harm

Surah Al-Falaq is a prayer of refuge — seeking Allah's protection from harm that comes from outside:

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak. From the evil of what He has created. And from the evil of darkness when it settles. And from the evil of the blowers in knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies."

The surah addresses four specific sources of external harm — the general evil that exists in creation, the dangers of darkness, the harm of black magic, and the destructive force of envy. By seeking refuge with the Lord of the daybreak — the One who splits darkness with light — the believer places themselves entirely under Allah's protection.

Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas are often recited together as a pair, and the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have recited them together after every prayer and before sleep. Displaying them together in the home reflects this sunnah practice.

Our Surah Al-Falaq wall art brings this verse in an elegant marble-finish design, available framed or as canvas stretch.

Surah An-Nas — Seeking Refuge from Internal Harm

Where Surah Al-Falaq addresses external harm, Surah An-Nas turns inward — seeking refuge from the whispered temptations that come from within:

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer. Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. From among the jinn and mankind."

The surah names Allah three times — as Lord, Sovereign, and God of all people — before seeking His protection from the whisperer (the Shaytan) who retreats when Allah is remembered and advances when He is forgotten. It is a reminder that the greatest battlefield is not external but internal — and that Allah's protection covers both.

Surah Al-Kafirun — The Declaration of Disavowal

Surah Al-Kafirun stands slightly apart from the other three in character. Where Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas are declarations and supplications, Al-Kafirun is a firm, dignified rejection of false worship:

"Say: O disbelievers. I do not worship what you worship. Nor are you worshippers of what I worship. Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship. Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."

The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have described Surah Al-Kafirun as equivalent to one-quarter of the Quran, and to have recited it in the two sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr. It is a surah of clarity — removing all ambiguity about where a believer stands in their worship.

Why Muslims Display the 4 Quls at Home

Complete Protection in Four Verses

Together, the 4 Quls cover every dimension of a believer's need for divine protection — from external harm, internal temptation, false beliefs, and spiritual attack. Displaying all four together in the home is a way of surrounding the household with that complete protection, made visible on the wall.

Daily Remembrance and Recitation

When the 4 Quls are on the wall, they are read. Children growing up in a home where these surahs are displayed absorb them naturally — the path to memorisation becomes the path through the living room. This is one of the most practical reasons Muslim families choose to display Quranic verses as art.

A Declaration of the Household's Faith

The 4 Quls together represent the full architecture of Islamic belief — tawhid, refuge, and disavowal of shirk. A home that displays them is making a quiet but clear declaration of what it stands for.

A Meaningful Gift

For weddings, housewarmings, or Eid, a framed set of the 4 Quls is a gift that carries genuine meaning — both spiritually and aesthetically. It is something the recipient will display, recite from, and live with for years.

Where to Display the 4 Quls in Your Home

The Entrance

Placing the 4 Quls near the entrance of your home means they are recited — consciously or subconsciously — every time someone enters or leaves. This reflects the sunnah practice of seeking Allah's protection upon leaving the home.

The Bedroom

Given the Prophet's ﷺ practice of reciting the 4 Quls before sleep, the bedroom is among the most meaningful placements. A 13×19 inch piece works well above a bedhead or on a facing wall.

The Prayer Corner

A dedicated prayer space is a natural home for the 4 Quls — surrounding the space of worship with the words most associated with the sunnah of prayer.

The Children's Room

Surah Al-Ikhlas and the 4 Quls are among the first surahs taught to Muslim children. Placing them in a child's room turns the wall into a gentle memorisation aid.

Choosing the Right Piece for Your Home

We offer the 4 Quls across three distinct designs, each suited to a different interior style:

For a complete 4 Quls display: Our 4 Quls in Blue brings all four surahs together in one elegant piece — a deep blue palette with gold calligraphy that works beautifully in traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
